The Phone Script That Actually Works

Stop Losing Sales Calls: Say This, Not That

If your sales calls feel flat, the issue is likely your message. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Lead with Curiosity, Not a Check-In

    1. Don’t say: “Just following up to see if you looked at the quote.”

    2. Do say: “Hey [Name], this is [You] from [Shop]. I know the delivery date is fast approaching, and I wanted to be responsive and make sure that we get this done in time. What questions can I help you answer?”

    3. Why it works: You’re here to help, not chase. It sets a professional tone and signals value.

  2. Ditch the Service List, ask About the Why

    1. Don’t lead with: “We do screen printing, embroidery, DTG…”

    2. Do ask: “What are these items for? What are you hoping to accomplish with this order?”

    3. Why it works: You make it about them, not your services. That builds relevance and trust.

  3. Use Clear, Confident Language

    1. Don’t say: “We’ll try to get that done soon. 

    2. Do say: “We’ll send you a mockup within the hour. Once approved, and an invoice is paid, we can start producing!”

    3. Why it works: Uncertainty kills deals. Confidence closes them.

  4. Create Real Urgency (Without Pressure)

    1. Don’t threaten: “I need an answer today or the price might change.”

    2. Do explain: “If artwork’s approved today, we’ll still hit your event date. Otherwise, we risk missing it.”

    3. Why it works: You’re being helpful, not pushy and that motivates decisions.

  5. End With Next Steps, Not Open Loops 

    1. Don’t ask: “OK, can you let me know when you decide?”

    2. Do close with: “I want to make sure that we get direction on moving forward or not. Could we schedule a call this Friday to either get a plan to move forward or if it's not a fit, that's okay as well.”

    3. Why it works: Clear path, low friction. Momentum stays with you.

Final Thought: Match your tone to their intent. Pushy equals desperate. Passive equals forgettable. Calm and confident equals a trusted partner. You’re not selling t-shirts. You’re helping them look sharp, hit deadlines, and make life easier. Own that.
